NEWSLETTER NUMBER 9.
September 2008.

Gentlemen,
I regret that due to personal commitments, and a very busy Engagement, Practice and Music Training period during the first half of the year, I am rather late in putting pen to paper for this Newsletter. However, I feel sure you will find the outcome very informative, and worth the wait !
On the 17th.January, twelve of our members attended the Funeral of ex Drum Major John Longhurst, Jim Norris sounded the Last Post and Reveille, with Stuart Sutton (Bb Flute) and Peter Taylor (Side Drum) playing the Grenadiers March. After the Service, the rest of us joined forces in the local Hostelry and played a short program of Marches and Selections that John would have known and enjoyed, the gathered family and friends were most appreciative of our efforts, which goes to show that even with a small number of players we can make a useful ensemble.
During December, five of our Flute Players donned Desert Combats and paraded with the Mercian regiment to swell their Corps of Drums numbers, this for the welcome back from Afghanistan Parades in Nottingham, Derby and Worcester.
After our AGM on the 20th.January, things really started to get hectic, firstly, eight of our members took turns over a five week period, living in the Grenadiers Sergeants Mess in Lille Barracks Aldershot, to give Music and playing instruction to the young Drummers, all of whom were very receptive, and a pleasure to teach. The Battalion is now stationed in Wellington Barracks, and carrying out Public Duties. I hear that the Corps of Drums are making a good name for themselves, and continuing their practice as and when other GREEN duties allow them to. Our thanks go to Drum Major Matt Betts and his staff for looking after us so well whilst in Barracks. It seemed that our availability to give training had snowballed, as we were approached to help with Music training of the Welsh Guards Corps of Drums by their Drum Major Mark Hayward. Three of our members attended each week. I hear that our services could well be required again during 2009 once the Battalion has moved to Aldershot. A similar period of instruction was extended to the Anglian Regiment under their Drum Major Panter during July in preparation of the Regiment’s Minden Day celebrations. In between all these training sessions, we also managed to get in four Practice sessions of our own at the Windsor Club, which took us up to Sunday 11th.May 2008.

PAST ENGAGEMENTS FROM MAY 2008.
Sunday 18th.May. Grenadier Guards Remembrance Parade. London.
We were delighted to be invited to play on this parade by the Regimental Adjutant, giving us the opportunity play alternately with the Grenadiers Regimental Band. We managed to put out a good size Corps of Drums with a total of 32, broken down to 23 Flutes, 6 Side Drummers, 1 Bass Drummer, 1 cymbalist and 1 Drum Major. We played Belphegor on the way out to Horse Guards, and Household Brigade on the way back, with the Side Drummers playing The Grenadiers March with the Band on re-entering Wellington Barracks.

Sunday 15th.June. Practice at Lille Barracks Aldershot.
We were most pleased to be invited to play again at Grenadier Day, but this time, with the serving 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards Corps of Drums. To this end, we enjoyed a good practice session with them in Lille Barracks, and as usual, we were well looked after and catered for during the day.

Sunday 29th.June. Grenadier Day at Lille Barracks Aldershot.
This being the third occasion playing at Grenadier Day, we were delighted to play along side the 1st Battalion Grenadiers Corps of Drums under their Drum Major, Matt Betts. Although a relatively short Program, all went well.

Sunday 27th.July. Garden Party for the Aylesbury GG Association.
The venue for this Garden Party was the very impressive grounds of Brickhill Manor near Leighton Buzzard, Bucks. The weather on the day was probably one of the hottest of the year, so the continuous supply of food and drinks was very much appreciated. We played a couple of sessions from 13.00hrs during the afternoon, finishing up with an abridged Retreat Beating. Our grateful thanks to Sir Phillip Duncombe for looking after our welfare throughout the afternoon.

FUTURE ENGAGEMENTS FOR 2008.
Sunday 14th. September. The Royal Chelsea Hospital.
This will be a repeat of our visit to the Hospital last year, where we will have a practice session in the resident Band Room, and then a short display/program for the in Pensioners during the afternoon. I anticipate we should meet up with a few Pensioner Drummers !!

INSTRUMENTS AND EQUIPMENT.
Although we took delivery of 6 Practice Pads earlier in the year, they were returned to Potters due to poor quality, we are still awaiting replacements. We now have 6 White PVC leg aprons, this acquisition due mainly to a very welcomed donation from David Redstone, one of our members.

FINANCES.
Our Finances are very healthy at the moment with around £2400 in the Bank. However, our Treasurer will be giving a detailed report at the AGM in January. Just as an early reminder, Annual Subscriptions will be due at the AGM.

WELFARE.
It seems all members are keeping fit and well. Our Chairman major Brian Lane continues to improve, but is still being subjected to bouts of Hospital treatment, so we hope things will settle down for him in due course.
